My Top 10 at 10 with Tbose recently hosted renowned music executive TK Nciza and his son, rising star Nkululeko “Ciza” Nciza, for a heartfelt interview ahead of Father’s Day.
Reflecting on his parenting journey, TK shared how, from as early as age three, he taught Ciza and his brother the importance of open communication.
“I know where we come from. To show respect, you had to look down. But over time, I realised that often reflects fear,” he explained. “From the beginning, I made them feel like they were part of the conversation. I wanted to hear their views.”
He added that, historically, many Black fathers were not afforded the opportunity to spend meaningful time with their children due to various circumstances.
“We have to do things differently so our children can flourish and reach their full potential. It starts at home. I always want to see him doing better than me,” said TK.
For Ciza, one of the country’s most exciting young music talents, the journey to this moment has felt like destiny.
“I feel like my childhood was preparing me for this in many ways,” he said. “I remember my dad involving me in Zahara’s music video, and my mum encouraging me to express myself through music and dance. I wasn’t an A student, but that didn’t stop me.”
