Former South African President Kgalema Motlanthe has joined the panel of facilitators tasked with mediating peace talks in the volatile eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Motlanthe will work alongside other prominent African figures, including former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, highlighting the continent’s drive to address its own conflicts through African-led solutions.
The African National Congress (ANC) welcomed and commended the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the East African Community (EAC) for their comprehensive approach to achieving lasting peace in the DRC, which involves immediate, medium, and long-term strategies.
The ANC urged all parties involved in the conflict to engage constructively, commit to a sustainable ceasefire, and pursue a negotiated settlement that prioritises the well-being of the Congolese people.
The party expressed deep concern over the ongoing violence, particularly the activities of armed groups that threaten the DRC’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Furthermore, the ANC called on the international community to support regional peace initiatives and to hold accountable those who are fueling instability for their own agendas.
Reaffirming its commitment to Pan-Africanism and solidarity, the ANC emphasised the importance of peace in the DRC for regional integration, economic development, and the realisation of Africa’s potential.
The party pledged to continue supporting diplomatic and political efforts aimed at securing peace and stability on the continent, aligning with its vision of a “Better Africa, Better World.”
