Free State police are now investigating a case of attempted murder against the Maselspoort attackers.
In what appears to be a racially charged incident, a group of white men physically assaulted two black teenagers for making use of a swimming pool which was reserved for whites only.
The violent incident was recorded by the brother’s sister and shared to social media on 26 December, and has since gone viral.
While initial charges of common assault was laid by the teenagers’ family, the charges against the white men were upgraded to attempted murder.
This after more information was shed which led police to change the charges from common assault and crimen injuria.
The senior state prosecutor handling the case gave the directive to amend the charges to attempted murder following statements from eyewitness accounts.
Kgokong Nakedi, (18) said he hoped the group of men would back off and leave him and his 15-year old brother alone after they had called the police.
Instead, the white men became more aggressive and angry and threatened to drown Nakedi.
There was a point in the video where the teenager was dragged into the pool around his neck by one of the white men, who submerged his head under water.
The incident sparked outrage with the EFF visiting the Free State resort to make a statement over its apparent racist segregation.
Maselspoort Resort reportedly had a sign up that stipulated the swimming pool was reserved for white use only.
Numerous attempts to reach the resort for comment have been unsuccessful and Maselspoort Resort management have not released a statement.
