Bad news for Julius Malema and five Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) MPS, as the Western Cape High Court dismissed their application to have their suspension at the State of the Nation Address (SONA) overturned.
On Thursday, 08 February, the day President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to deliver his 2024 SONA, Malema, the party’s leader and his EFF MPS including, Deputy President Floyd Shivambu are serving a month-long suspension.
The suspension comes following the EFF members disruptive interruption at the 2023 SONA. Malema and his MPS were found guilty of contempt of Parliament for storming onto the stage last year, while President Ramaphosa was speaking.
Malema, Shivambu as well as senior EFF members, Vuyani Pambo, Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, secretary-general Marshall Dlamini and party spokesperson Sinawo Tambo will not be allowed inside the National Assembly on Thursday during the President’s address.
In November the EFF leader and his MPS were ordered to apologize to Ramaphosa for the interruption.
However, Malema did not feel their actions were wrong, and he said the voice of the EFF will never be suppressed.
“You will never suppress the voice of the voiceless because whether Malema is in parliament or not, members of the EFF are there in parliament, and the presence of the EFF will be felt there.”
Malema and the five EFF MPS will remain suspended for the duration of a month, and their salaries for the month will also be cut.
