Following the brazen cash-in-transit (CIT) heist on the Golden Highway, south of Johannesburg last week, police have foiled a heist in Dobsonville, Soweto.
On Saturday, 03 February, the South African Police Service (SAPS) followed up on information of a planned CIT robbery in Dobsonville and arrived at the active crime scene to intercept suspects.
Police foiled the CIT heist before the suspects could bomb the van.
Upon arrival SAPS was met with gunfire from the suspects and subsequently returned fire.
Two suspects were killed during the exchange, and police recovered an R5 rifles, 3 AK47s and three vehicles that were used to carry out the heist.
National Commissioner of SAPS, General Fannie Masemola commended the team for foiling the CIT heist, saying police will continue to deal decisively against serious and violent crime.
“Our intelligence operators are on the ground, our teams are on high alert.
We cannot rule with criminals, it’s either them or us, our focus is to ensure the safety and security of law abiding citizens.
We will continue to sharpen our focus and clamp down on serious and violent crime with a view to apprehend and ensure successful conviction of those behind CIT crimes in the country.”
Police have since launched a manhunt for the remaining suspects who fled the scene on foot.
