Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has threatened to fire the Acting HOD for the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Khululekile Mase over the leaked dismissal blunder on social media.
On Thursday, 27 June a leaked letter informing the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) green army workers that their contract had been terminated was shared to social media.
The letter informed the green army contractors that their stipends would be delayed as a result of their contracts coming to an end.
It was Khululekile Mase’s signature on the letter, and Lesufi claimed he has not been consulted.
“Someone is too excited. This letter was written without my consent or approval.
The intentions are clear to undermine the authority of the 7th administration. This, will not be allowed.”

Lesufi called an urgent meeting with all HODs in his cabinet thereafter to address the reckless letter and threatened to fire Mase for the blunder.
The Premier shared in an update on X that the EPWP green army is not going anywhere.
“Going nowhere! There’s confusion about the EPWP green army contracts and the continued employment of the Gauteng Traffic Wardens.
The EPWP green army are mandated to clean our environment and waste removal while the Gauteng Traffic Warden are protecting us against crime.”
