The R950 billion estimate for flood damage repair was a “honest miscalculation,” according to the KwaZulu-Natal administration.
The provincial administration announced on Sunday that repairing flood damage across the province would cost R950 billion. However, after a late-night adjustment, the sum was reduced to R17 billion.
Initially, the provincial government predicted that repairing the infrastructure of the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) would cost R940 348 500 000.

However, the amount was changed to R955 449 000 in an amended statement.
Lennox Mabaso, a spokesperson for the KwaZulu-Natal government, said the long-term rehabilitation of Prasa infrastructure will cost an additional R1 688 100 000.
The flood damage is now estimated to be worth roughly R17 billion.
“It was just an honest error in the middle of trying to work out a number of issues. Hence, when it was observed, we immediately corrected the error. We regret the error. There’s nothing untoward. To err is human. Government is always open, transparent and accountable.” said Mabaso.
