The president of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, 80, agrees to serve another term following coalition parties’ failure to agree on a candidate for the presidency.
Mattarella did not want to serve another term but was persuaded as a suitable successor could not be found. He was re-elected on Saturday by Italy’s members of parliament and regional representatives at their eight attempts. He received 759 out of a possible 1009 votes.
Speaking after his re-election, Mattarela said that he felt a responsibility to remain in office in light of the challenges currently facing the country. He says the duty to serve the people of Italy must prevail over his personal choices.
“The difficult days spent for the election to the Presidency of the Republic during the serious emergency that we are still going through – on the healthcare, on the economic, on the social – call for a sense of responsibility and to Respect for the decisions of Parliament,” said Sergio.
