  • The Gauteng Department of Education’s 2027 online admissions for Grade 1 and Grade 8 open at 8am on 5 August and close at midnight on 4 September 2026.
  • Parents and legal guardians are urged to prepare all required documents in advance and apply to between three and five public schools to improve placement opportunities.
  • Education MEC Lebogang Maile has warned that bribery to secure school placements is a criminal offence that could result in dismissal, prosecution and jail time.

Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Lebogang Maile has announced that applications for the 2027 online admissions process for Grade 1 and Grade 8 will officially open on Wednesday, 5 August 2026 at 8 am.

In a statement issued on Monday, 27 July, the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) said applications will close at midnight on Friday, 4 September 2026, urging parents and legal guardians to prepare in advance.

“Parents and legal guardians are encouraged to prepare early by gathering the required supporting documents, verifying their information and familiarising themselves with the application process before the system opens,” the department said.

The GDE reminded parents that the online admissions system is strictly for learners starting Grade 1 and Grade 8 in the 2027 academic year.

“Parents of children currently in Grade R must still apply online for Grade 1, while applications for Grades 2 to 7 and Grades 9 to 12 must be submitted directly to schools,” the department said.

Documents required for the application

Parents and legal guardians must prepare the following original and certified documents:

  • Parent’s ID, passport, refugee permit, asylum seeker permit, permanent residence permit or study permit
  • Child’s South African birth certificate
  • Proof of home address, including a recent municipal utility bill (not older than three months) in the parent’s name, or a formal lease agreement signed by both the landlord and tenant, alongside proof of rent payment and a utility bill for the same physical address.
  • Proof of work address
  • Learner’s latest school report
  • Clinic, vaccination and immunisation card

How to prepare for a successful application

To improve their chances of a successful application, parents and legal guardians are encouraged to:

  • Familiarise themselves with the online admissions process
  • Gather all supporting documents before applications open
  • Verify that all personal information is accurate
  • Identify suitable schools before applying
  • Ensure they understand all compulsory application requirements

Choosing the right schools

The department has urged parents to maximise placement opportunities by prioritising schools within their feeder zone and considering each school’s available capacity.

To improve the likelihood of placement, parents are encouraged to apply to a minimum of three and a maximum of five public schools.

“Applying to only one or two schools may significantly reduce placement opportunities if those schools reach capacity before the learner is considered,” the department said.

Maile warns against bribery

Speaking at a media briefing on Monday, Maile also warned parents against attempting to secure school placements through bribery, saying anyone involved could face criminal charges.

“If there’s any one of our employees who’s found to have taken a bribe claiming they can secure a school place, we will dismiss them and open criminal charges against them,” he said.

“The public must not be misled into trying to buy space. It could backfire badly, and they could end up in jail.”

    1. Definitions and Interpretation

    1.1.“Personal Information” means information relating to an identifiable, living, natural person and where it is applicable, identifiable, existing juristic person, including all information as defined in the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013. 

    1.2  Parliament assented to POPIA on 19 November 2013. The commencement date of section 1, Part A of Chapter 5, section 112 and section 113 was 11 April 2014. The commencement date of the other sections was 1 July 2020 (with the exception of section 110 and 114(4). The President of South Africa has proclaimed the POPI commencement date to be 1 July 2020.

     
    1.3. “Processing” means the creation, generation, communication, storage, destruction of personal information as more fully defined in the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013.
