Gauteng residents have been urged to use water sparingly as warmer days approach, amid concerns about high water consumption across the province.
The Gauteng Provincial Government says the recent high consumption of water in the province has led to a decline in water levels in reservoirs and tower storage.
“The increased demand experienced by municipalities is placing significant pressure on Gauteng’s water supply system,” said the Gauteng Provincial Government’s spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga.
Mhlanga says responsible water use is essential to maintaining a reliable and sustainable water supply for households, businesses and critical public services.
He urged residents in three of the province’s metros to avoid the unnecessary use of water.
Residents are encouraged to adopt practical water-saving measures, including:
- Repairing leaking taps and pipes.
- Taking shorter showers.
- Using water-efficient appliances where possible.
- Avoiding the hosing of driveways and pavements.
- Limiting the watering of gardens to essential periods.
“Residents should make water conservation a daily habit and promptly report leaks, burst pipes and other water losses to their local municipalities,” Mhlanga added.
