- The shootout occurred after law enforcement intercepted a getaway vehicle linked to an armed robbery at a private residence.
- Authorities recovered three firearms, stolen cash, and counterfeit registration plates from the scene.
Three robbery suspects were fatally wounded on Thursday afternoon following a shootout with law enforcement officers on Vereeniging Road in Alrode, Ekurhuleni.
The incident began shortly after a victim was robbed of an undisclosed sum of cash outside his home, prompting police to issue an immediate lookout for the perpetrators’ getaway vehicle.
Members of the Tactical Response Team spotted the suspect vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. However, the occupants opened fire on the officers, triggering a high-stakes return of fire and a call for backup.
The Gauteng Traffic Airwing, CAP Security, and Tracker Connect arrived to assist.
“All three suspects in the vehicle were fatally wounded and declared dead at the scene,” confirmed police spokesperson Col Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi.
Following the exchange, officers recovered three handguns from the vehicle two featuring defaced serial numbers—alongside the stolen money and a set of fraudulent registration plates.
The firearms will undergo ballistic testing as the police investigation continues.
