Edgar Lungu, who served as Zambia’s president from 2015 to 2021, has died at the age of 68.
His political party, the Patriotic Front (PF), announced his passing on Thursday, June 5, 2025.
Lungu passed away at 6:00 AM at Medforum Clinic in Pretoria, South Africa, where he had been receiving specialized medical treatment.
The Patriotic Front confirmed his death in a statement posted on Facebook, adding that his daughter and a family lawyer had verified the news.
A significant figure in Zambian politics, Lungu first assumed the presidency in January 2015.
He led the Patriotic Front and, in his later political career, chaired the Tonse Alliance.
His tenure as head of state concluded in August 2021 when he was defeated by the incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema in the general election.
