Richard Mdluli, a former head of Crime Intelligence, has been granted parole.
In 2020, he received a judgment that carried a five-year prison term. Mdluli was found guilty in 1998 of kidnapping, assaulting, and intimidating Oupa Ramogibe.
The charges against Mdluli for the 1999 murder of Ramogibe were later dropped.
He was granted bail in his ongoing corruption case while still incarcerated for kidnapping and assault, thereby clearing the door for his parole.

Singabakho Nxumalo, a spokesman for the correctional services department, said the decision was made by the correctional supervision and parole board after it had reviewed Mdluli’s profile and other materials submitted for consideration of parole.
“The minimum detention period for Mdluli was on May 28 2022, but he could not be considered for parole placement at the time due to a pending court case.”
“Subsequently, he was given bail of R10,000 (paid in full on June 28), thus paving the way for his parole consideration process to proceed,” Nxumalo said.
