The photographer who accused Floyd Shivambu of assault denies using the incident as a means to gain monetary compensation.
In March 2018, EFF MP Floyd Shivambu was accused of choking and hitting Adrian de Kock in the face.
This after the photographer approached the member of the National Assembly for comment on Patricia de Lille’s disciplinary hearing.
Shivambu had apparently requested that his picture not be taken before the incident occurred.
Shortly after the incident, Floyd Shivambu issued a statement denying that he had assaulted the photographer and called the incident “a scuffle.”
Shivambu said at the time he wasn’t aware that de Kock was a member of the media.
Eyewitnesses for de Kock testified that Shivambu held the media personnel around his neck. However, Shivambu’s lawyers insist that de Kock did not have accreditation from Parliament.
Adrian de Kock said the reason he opened assault charges was to get an apology from the EFF member not to receive compensation.
This despite requesting a R300K payout in court this week to withdraw the charges. He claims his medical expenses after the alleged assault included prescription painkillers and a R5000 massage machine.
The Media24 photographer said that he didn’t feel safe and felt despondent fearing that his career was over.
The trial was postponed until April.
