A fatal multi-vehicle collision involving a heavy-tonnage truck and a minibus taxi has caused severe traffic congestion on the N12 West in Johannesburg.
The crash occurred on Thursday afternoon, 2 July 2026, just after the Comaro Road off-ramp in the Bassonia/Gleneagles area.
Motorists have been urged to avoid the area and use alternative routes as emergency services continue working at the scene.
“Regrettably, the driver of the truck sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased at the scene. The driver of the minibus taxi escaped unharmed, and no other injuries have been reported,” said Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla.
According to preliminary reports, the truck’s load shifted forward and crashed onto the vehicle’s cabin, fatally injuring the driver.
Three lanes of the N12 West remain closed, with only one lane open to traffic.
“Emergency services and specialised recovery teams are actively working to clear the heavy load from the roadway and recover the truck cabin,” Fihla added.
JMPD officers are managing traffic, but motorists should expect lengthy delays for several hours.
Westbound motorists are advised to divert well before the Comaro Road off-ramp and consider using the R59, South Rand Road, Verona Street and Rifle Range Road as alternative routes.
