Eskom has announced that the planned Stage 3 load shedding for the weekend has been escalated to Stage 4 following additional breakdowns that occurred overnight.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Eskom said: ” “This is to replenish the emergency reserves in order to contain load shedding to lower stages next week,” Eskom said.

On Friday, it had said it planned to cut the power at stage 3 throughout the weekend, meaning 3GW of capacity would not be available to consumers. At stage 4, the figure is 4GW of capacity.

According to Eskom, a generation unit at the Kendal power plant was shut down overnight for emergency repairs, and units at Majuba, Lethabo, Camden, the Cahorra Bassa hydroelectric project in Mozambique, as well as one at each of those locations were shut down for crucial planned maintenance.
At Kusile and Tutuka, a generation unit each was put back into operation over night.
Eskom reported having 16.6 GW of power unavailable due to plant outages, in addition to the 5.6 GW of capacity that is scheduled maintenance.
