Eskom has just informed South Africans that they can expect Stage 4 loadshedding from 13h00 on Monday, 10 July, until 05h00 on Tuesday morning.
The power utility says higher demand and slight reduction in generation capacity as a result of the bitter cold snow day, that is the order of the day for much of the country, is the reason.
This despite Electricity Minister, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa previously saying the cold front will not affect loadshedding.
Just a week ago, Ramokgopa promised South Africans two-thirds of every day will be without loadshedding, as the electricity grid is in “recovery.”
The Minister was briefing media on Sunday, 02 July on the progress made with government’s energy action plan, saying there’s now 29 000 MW capacity available on the grid.
According to Ramokgopa this is why Eskom has been able to keep loadshedding times to a low, only moving between Stages 2 and 3 for the better part of the past month.
However, owing to the cold front that crept in due to snow falling on parts of the country, loadshedding will now be pushed to Stage 4.
In a statement, Eskom said there were breakdowns which put a dent on generating capacity at 14 252MW, over the past 24-hours at Duvha, Hendrina, Kendal, Kriel, Matimba and Medupi.
