Former President Jacob Zuma’s daughter, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla (42), was released on warning after she appeared in the Durban Magistrates Court on Thursday for her alleged role in the July 2021 riots.
In her affidavit read by her legal representative, Advocate Dali Mpofu, Zuma-Sambudla said the charges against her are malicious and politically motivated.
“They are aimed at settling political scores with my father, by the current regime.”
Meanwhile, prosecutor Yuri Gangai said the state does not oppose bail as Zuma-Sambudla is not considered a flight risk.
The courtroom was filled to the brim by uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK Party) members including her father Jacob Zuma, twin brother Duduzane Zuma and Secretary General Floyd Shivambu.
Also in attendance were chief whip Mzwanele Manyi, national spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela, former police minister Nkosinathi Nhleko and former KwaZulu-Natal premier Willies Mchunu.
According to Mail&Guardian, Zuma-Sambudla has been charged with incitement to commit violence and domestic terrorism under the Protection of Constitutional Democracy against Terrorist and Related Activities Act.
The charges were levelled against her for social media posts on X in which she is alleged to have incited violence during the July 2021 riots.
The riots started when Jacob Zuma was arrested after he was found guilty for refusing to appear before the Zondo Commission.
A total of 354 people died and damages amounting to R50 billion were caused.
Zuma-Sambudla was released on a warning and the matter was transferred to the High Court for Thursday the 20th of March.

“There is no case” – Jacob Zuma
Jacob Zuma addressed party supporters, thanking them for listening to the court proceedings. He told the crowd that they just came out of court, but they cannot say what the case is about.
“You’ll be arrested for saying ‘I see you’ one day. What’s wrong with that statement, anyway? My daughter, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, is being charged for using those very words. Why the silence?,” said Zuma
