Advocate Billy Downer and journalist Karyn Maughan are set to square off against former President Jacob Zuma in court this Friday, 28 July, as the deadline for Zuma’s return to prison looms.
Both Downer and Maughan will apply separately for an urgent enforcement of their successful bid to overturn Jacob Zuma’s private prosecution against them.
On 07 June, Zuma’s private prosecution of State attorney Billy Downer and News24 reporter Karyn Maughan was overturned by the Pietermaritzburg High Court, with costs.
Zuma accused President Cyril Ramaphosa of leaking his medical information and being an accessory over the leak.
However, the court ruled that Zuma abused the legal process and was guided by ulterior motives against Ramaphosa.
Zuma has also failed in his attempts to privately prosecute Downer and Maughan.

Such enforcement would block him (while he appeals) from demanding we appear in court for that private prosecution.
The Jacob Zuma Foundation says Downer and Maughan are doing everything to avoid appearing in the criminal court on 04 August, which is the date that the private prosecution was postponed to earlier this year.
“President Zuma opposes the application on the grounds that it is not urgent, it is premature and no exceptional circumstances have been established.
In any event, accused persons have a duty to obey the postponement order issued by the criminal court judge in February to be present in court at 09h30 on 04 August 2023, or face arrest.”
