The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) announced on Sunday that HIV and STI infections decreased in Gauteng between 2020 and 2024.
According to the Health Department risky behaviors, such as multiple sexual partners and unprotected intercourse, are common in certain communities and contribute to the spread of STIs.
Despite efforts to develop simple interventions to minimize risky sexual behavior, behavior change remains a challenging task.
Health officials attribute this to improved preventative methods and awareness efforts.
“For the different age groups from 15- 24 years old, in 2020, the province recorded a 2.9% HIV incidence (HIV new infections) whereas in 2024, 1% was reported. The same trend has been reported amongst those aged between 25 – 49, as in 2020, a 5.1% HIV incidence (HIV new infections) was recorded while in 2024, 2.9% was reported.”
The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) also indicated that it has seen a large increase in PrEP acceptance since its debut in 2019. From February to December 2024, 105 924 persons were initiated on the HIV prevention regimen. The province has seen a decrease in new HIV infections due to the implementation of comprehensive HIV prevention and treatment programs at health care facilities and communities.
