The Eastern Cape Department of Transport has launched Automatic Number Plate Recognition buses which will make it more difficult for defaulters to avoid paying their outstanding fines.
As part of its campaign during Transport Month which falls throughout October, the department says the buses will give motorists a chance to pay spot fines.
“Not only does this give motorists a chance to pay traffic fines on the spot but those with warrants of arrest may also pay on the spot. You can also check your fines at the buses.
This is another way we’re building an efficient, safe, sustainable, affordable and accessible transport system.”
The Automatic Number Plate Recognition buses were launched in Buffalo City Metro, and uses optical character recognition to read the registration plates of vehicles.
Throughout October the Department of Transport will unveil new projects and campaigns aimed at making the roads safer.
Apart from ramping up road blocks throughout the country, the Department of Transport and its entities will showcase transport infrastructure services in aviation; maritime; public transport and roads.
These investments are how the Department aims to build an integrated public transport network across the country.
