Democratic Alliance gears up to challenge EFF’s National Shutdown.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) announced that it would be petitioning the court for an urgent interdict against the red berets in order to halt “looters and anarchists” after denouncing the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) call for a planned March 20 nationwide shutdown.
The EFF made the announcement that it would stage a nationwide strike in opposition to ongoing power shedding and that it would demand President Cyril Ramaphosa to step down.
On Tuesday, DA leader John Steenhuisen argued that this requirement was absurd and that it was also illegal. He claimed that calling for a national shutdown to oppose load shedding had absolutely no logic.
The DA is taking steps to preempt the EFF’s violence and prevent it from taking place at all.

It is completely unacceptable to us that the EFF is trampling on the rights of others, in order to make their own demands heard. Let’s #StopTheEFF.

The DA leader warned against underestimating the harm that the EFF’s impending nationwide strike could do to companies and employees.

They have also written to Police Minister Bheki Cele highlighting the imminent threat the EFF’s planned nationwide shutdown poses to the economy, public and private infrastructure, as well as to the safety of citizens
“Shutting the economy down for a day will do nothing at all to solve this problem that has been decades in the making. On the contrary, it will only push South Africa deeper into chaos and poverty,”
“We have called on Minister Cele to issue a strong statement against the national shutdown and assure South Africans that the South African Police Service (Saps) and the entire security cluster is on standby to respond to violence,” said Steenhuisen.
The Economic Freedom Fighters called DA’s legal action frivolous and reaffirmed South Africa’s right to a peaceful protest.
