The death toll in the Limpopo cash-in-transit (CIT) shootout with police has climbed to 19, from the previously reported 18.
Two of the 19 were women, and the South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that another body was found at the scene over the weekend.
SAPS says five people who were linked to the suspected robbers, were arrested, and they are expected to appear in court this week.
On Friday, 01 September, police initially said that 18 people, 16 males and 2 females, who were suspected of planning to carry out a CIT heist in Makhado, Limpopo were killed.
National Commissioner of SAPS, General Fannie Masemola says police broken the syndicate which is possibly responsible for a number of CIT heists in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and Gauteng.
According to Masemola, the group were under observation for a number of days before police pounced on them at an identified address.
“As soon as police approached the address, the group of suspects began shooting, police retaliated. Sixteen males and two females were declared dead at the scene.
At a second address in Thohoyandou, four suspects were arrested.
Ten vehicles including several high powered performance vehicles and seven automatic rifles have been seized.
Various policing experts are still combing the scene.
A senior police officer attached to the DPCI was wounded during the shootout and is currently receiving medical care in hospital.”
Masemola said further investigations will continue to ascertain other crimes that the group may have perpetrated.
