The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Johannesburg has escalated the political temperature in the city by filing motions of no confidence against Mayor Dada Morero and City Council Speaker Nobuhle Mthembu.
Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku, the DA Caucus Leader, confirmed the move, saying that Mayor Morero has “failed the people of Johannesburg.”
The timing of the DA’s action is particularly significant, coming mere hours before Mayor Morero is scheduled to deliver his crucial State of the City Address this Wednesday afternoon.
The DA’s move appears to be largely fueled by the escalating water crisis in Johannesburg.
The city is currently grappling with a severe shortage, exacerbated by aging infrastructure, alarmingly high levels of non-revenue water, and persistent drought conditions affecting the region.
Morero has previously publicly acknowledged the gravity of the water situation.
He has stated that approximately 40% of the city’s water supply is lost due to a combination of leaks in the aging network and illegal connections, underscoring the immense scale of the challenge facing his administration.
Morero has faced controversy in recent months. In August 2024, his proposal to potentially recruit documented foreign nationals into the Johannesburg Metro Police Department to address language barriers in crime-fighting efforts ignited a firestorm of criticism.
