South Africa’s top court will on Friday, 20 June 2025, celebrate 30 years of shaping the country’s constitutional democracy.
The Constitutional Court is the apex court in South Africa, which was established following the country’s first democratic elections in 1994.
The commemorative ceremony will take place at the Constitutional Hill in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, which was once a symbol of oppression during the apartheid regime.
President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to deliver a keynote address at the commemoration ceremony to honour the Court’s legacy of upholding human rights and delivering judgements that have defined the democratic order.
The Court was opened by the country’s first President, Nelson Mandela, in 1995. Its first President was Justice Arthur Chaskalson under then-Chief Justice Michael Corbett.
The court is now headed by the country’s first female Chief Justice, Mandisa Maya.
