South African moviegoers have made box office history.
Sony Pictures South Africa announced on Monday that its latest release, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, has grossed more than R44 million at the local box office, making it the biggest opening weekend in South African cinema history.
In a post on social media, Sony thanked audiences across the country for turning out in record numbers.
“Thank you, South Africa!
You’ve made history.
Celebrating the biggest opening weekend in South African cinema history, with an incredible R44+ million at the South African box office.”
According to MyBroadband, Ster-Kinekor recorded R9.65 million in ticket sales on the film’s opening day, 29 July 2026, surpassing the opening-day record previously held by Avengers: Endgame, which was released in 2019.
The film has also enjoyed remarkable success internationally. It is estimated to have earned more than $900 million (about R15 billion) worldwide during its opening weekend, making it one of the biggest global film launches in history.
The latest figures suggest there is still strong demand for the big-screen experience, despite the challenges cinemas have faced in recent years following the COVID-19 pandemic and the continued growth of streaming platforms.
Meanwhile, the Spider-Man: Brand New Day craze continues to dominate social media, with videos showing fans queuing outside cinemas and sold-out screenings across South Africa.
According to South African television critic Thinus Ferreira of TV with Thinus, these are the current top 10 films at the Southern African box office:
- Spider-Man: Brand New Day (new, Filmfinity)
