Convicted ‘Facebook rapist’, Thabo Bester is being held at the same prison that Ananias Mathe escaped from in 2006 using Vaseline.
Mathe, a notorious Mozambican national reportedly escaped from the Kgosi Mampuru C-Max prison in Pretoria, by rubbing Vaseline all over his body and squeezing through the prison bars.
According to reports, Mathe who was convicted for rape, murder and house robbery had made several attempts to escape from a number of maximum security prisons that he was transferred to.
Ananias Mathe is said to have died from natural causes on 27 December 2016, at the King Edward Hospital in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
Despite similarities between both convicted felons and their escape attempts, the National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Makgothi Thobakgale is confident Thabo Bester will not be able to escape from the C-Max facility.
Thobakgale together with Police Minister Bheki Cele, and Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Ronald Lamola were addressing media after Bester and Dr Nandipha Magudumana were brought back to South Africa on Thursday, 13 April.
“Bester will be under 24/7 security and close monitoring by correctional services officers who are well-trained to deal with people such as Bester.
The prison was upgraded in the past 5-years and he will never escape.”

Bester and Dr Nandipha were arrested in Tanzania over the Easter weekend while trying to cross the border into Kenya.
While Bester remains at the Kgosi Mampuru prison, Dr Nandipha is being processed to appear at the Bloemfontein Magistrates court on Thursday.
The disgraced doctor is facing a range of charges including murder, defeating the ends of justice and aiding and abetting a fugitive.
Bester escaped from the private Mangaung Correctional Center in May last year, after faking his own death. He was serving a life sentence for rape and murder at the time.
