South Africa’s most-wanted couple, Dr Nandipha Magudumana and Thabo Bester have landed back home and are in police custody.
Police say Dr Nandipha will make her first court appearance at the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on Thursday, 13 April.
The doctor is facing possible charges of defeating the ends of justice, aiding and abetting a fugitive and murder. Thabo Bester is also expected to face additional charges, which will go over and above his life sentence for rape and murder.
Bester’s charges are in relation to him faking his own death at the Mangaung Correctional Center in May last year.
The couple who have been dubbed “Bonnie and Clyde” were arrested in Tanzania last week, while trying to make their way through the border to Kenya.
Police separated the couple, who are believed to be married via customary law, taking Bester to the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre in Tshwane.
More arrests made in the Thabo Bester case
Meanwhile, police say they have made more arrests in the Thabo Bester case, and are calling on anyone who were involved in the convict’s escape to hand themselves over to police.
A 44-year-old man is expected to appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrate Court on Thursday, 13 April 2023 following his arrest on Tuesday, 11 April 2023.
The man is an employee of the company that installed and maintained cameras at the Mangaung Correctional Centre.
He faces charges of aiding and abetting a convicted prisoner to escape from lawful custody, defeating the ends of justice, as well as a violation of a dead body.
North West police have also seized a white Porsche Cayenne vehicle believed to belong to Dr Nandipha.
The vehicle was seized by the Gauteng SAPS Tracking Team in Lichtenburg, North West.
A 28-year-old male driver has since been taken into police custody where he is currently being questioned.
The National Commissioner of SAPS, General Fannie Masemola says police are closing the net on those responsible for aiding Thabo Bester to escape from lawful custody.
“Anyone who knows that they are involved in this case are warned to hand themselves over to authorities. Either they hand themselves in or we fetch them ourselves.”
General Masemola
Investigations into this case are unfolding and the SAPS will continue to provide an update to the nation when time permits.
