The American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has installed a new regulatory rule that will allow American retail pharmacies to dispense abortion medication.
The abortion pill, Mifepristone is used to terminate an early pregnancy.
Despite the the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade in June 2022, not only will this new FDA rule allow for the distribution and delivery of abortion pills across the USA, including in states with strict abortion bans, but this decision also provides a sense of relief to many affected by these harsh abortion rules.
All pharmacies and local drugstores that agree to follow the FDA’s criteria will be allowed to dispense abortion medication in physical stores or by mail order.
Regardless of the Abortions accessibility patients will still need a valid prescription from a registered health care provider/practitioner in order to receive the medication.
The FDA has not made any announcements yet however the agency has updated its website to reflect the new rule.
Pharmacies may now start applying for certification to distribute mifepristone.
