Nontobeko Shongwe, (21), is suing the Gauteng Department of Health for R50 million after her left leg was amputated without her permission.
Shongwe claims she was admitted for nine days at Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria in November last year. Prior to that, she was in and out of hospitals with complications to her left knee.
She claims that Dr. Faleye (who operated on her), botched her surgery and forced her to have her leg amputated after he sliced her veins by accident, causing her to bleed severely.

She claims the traumatic amputation also stopped her from writing her extra matric exam in 2021, preventing her from continuing her accounting and auditing studies at a higher education school.
EFF’s head of international relations, Godrich Gardee confirmed this week that his law firm (Godrich Gardee Attorneys) will be taking the 21-year-old’s case.
Godrich Gardee Attorneys shared with Pretoria News why a R 50 million was a justifiable compensation.
“In the circumstances of the exposition, it is clear there is an admission by the doctor of gross negligence and reckless medical professional conduct. All of these things considered, we are instructed to demand R50 million in respect of compensation for general and special damages.” wrote Godrich Gardee Attorneys
