Seven suspected illegal zama zamas have been charged for the rape of 8 Krugersdorp women. The men who were arrested during various raids, will appear in court on Thursday, 11 August.
More than 120 illegal miners have been arrested since the shocking gang rape of the women at the end of July.
The men are expected to be charged with multiple counts of rape, robbery with aggravated circumstances and for being in South Africa illegally.
Amongst the 7 men arrested is a 15-year old minor who has undergone an age assessment and will appear back in court on Thursday.
Contents of the docket indicate that 14 men who were accused from the 64 that appeared in court are facing charges.
Charges range from rape to sexual assault and robbery but the 7 suspected illegal zama zamas have been linked to the rapes of the 8 women.
Since the horrifying gang rape of the 8 women, the Krugersdorp community have embarked on a massive clean-up operation.
Residents have burnt the shacks of zama zamas and dismantled illegal mine shafts which they say are being used to enter the mines illegally.
