The National Shutdown started on a violent footing on Sunday night, 19 March after police reportedly opened fire on a number of students in Braamfontein.
Video footage captured SAPS officers dispersing crowds of EFF supporters who began demonstrating hours before the planned National Shutdown on Monday, 20 March.
EFF Member of the National Assembly, Mbuyiseni Ndlozi spoke out over what he calls the wrongful arrests of students who were “peacefully protesting” before they were shot at.

Meanwhile, Police Minister Bheki Cele confirmed that about 57 people have been arrested so far, predominantly in Braamfontein where clashes with police ensued.
The Minister was addressing media on Monday morning, detailing what transpired in Braamfontein.
“On the question of Braamfontein last night, mostly students and members of the EFF were clashing with police. The calls came through of people standing on the roofs of cars and causing damage to property.
When asked to stop, they didn’t stop so the minimum required force was used, stun grenades and fortunately there were no rubber bullets used.
Up to this time 57 people have been arrested.”
