Only invited and accredited guests will be allowed into the St George’s Cathedral ahead of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu’s funeral on Saturday.
Police say efforts have been stepped up around the precinct to ensure a “safe and secure” funeral.
Colonel Athlenda Mathe says the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure has assessed the state of readiness of all stakeholders.
Mathe says they are satisfied with the plan, which includes security plans and route security.
Officers will also monitor access control to the St George’s Cathedral in Cape Town. The late archbishop is currently lying in state.

Thousands expected at the Grand Parade
Mathe has urged people to mourn in an orderly and responsible manner.
She also encouraged mourners who are visiting the cathedral to hand over flowers to cooperate with law enforcement officers.
“They must exercise patience so that all who will be in the vicinity of the cathedral can mourn in a safe and secure environment,” says Mathe.
Officials have also reminded mourners to wear their masks at all times. COVID-19 alert level 1 regulations will be followed.
“Only 100 people will be allowed into the Cathedral on the day of the Special Official funeral. The rest of the mourners will be allowed to view proceedings at the Grand Parade where the screening of the live proceedings will take place,” says Mathe.
Mathe says thousands are expected to gather at the Grand Parade. Parents and guardians have been advised to give careful consideration to bringing young children along.
She says the following roads will be closed and controlled by law enforcement agencies from Friday between 6am and 7pm and on Saturday from 6am to 4pm.
- Adderley Street from Strand until Wale Street
- Wale Street from Adderley up until Queen Victoria
