Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects who hijacked Mpumalanga’s Human Settlements MEC, Speedy Mashilo.
Mashilo is also the Regional Chairperson of the ANC.
“According to the information we received, Speedy Mashilo was driving his Toyota Hilux bakkie on the R568 road between Ekangala and KwaMhlanga on Thursday, when he was overtaken by a BMW sedan with one visible occupant.
“Suddenly two unknown occupants, who were not visible pointed guns at him and forced him to stop. He was then forced into their BMW and drove off with him whilst the other suspect was driving his bakkie,” police said in a statement.
SAPS said the hijackers then drove towards East Rand with him.
“They then went into a particular house in a township where they took him into another car. Later on, they drove towards Olifantsfontein, Tembisa and dropped him in a secluded area at around 8pm,” police said.
Mashilo managed to walk to a nearby road where he was assisted by a security vehicle that was passing by.

Police appeal for information
Police said Mashilo was robbed of his Toyota Hilux, bank cards, the brown bag containing R25 000, groceries, wallet, and a licensed hunting rifle with 25 rounds of ammunition.
A case of carjacking was reported to the Olifantsfontein Police Station and transferred to Kwamhlanga.
The investigation is continuing.
“We appeal to members of the public who may have information to contact the nearest Police station or call Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or send information via MYSAPSAPP. All received information will be treated as confidential and callers may opt to remain anonymous,” police said.
ANC Nkangala spokesperson Sello Matshoga said Mashilo was on his way to Sun City when he was taken.
Matshoga said the ANC in the region condemns the hijacking and kidnapping. He appealed to the public who had information about the attack to report it to the police.
