Essential Car Maintenance for the Warmer Months in South Africa

Mabuyane Mabuza

As the seasons change and South Africa transitions from winter to spring and summer, it is crucial to ensure that your car is in optimal condition. Proper vehicle maintenance not only enhances performance and safety but also helps to prevent potential breakdowns and costly repairs. Allow me to highlight the most important mechanical aspects of your car that need attention before the upcoming spring/summer season in South Africa.

Check and Replace Fluids:

One of the most critical aspects of car maintenance is checking and maintaining fluid levels. Before the warmer seasons arrive, it is essential to inspect and replace the following fluids:

Engine oil: Oil lubricates the engine and prevents wear. Ensure that you have the correct viscosity oil for warmer weather conditions.

  • Coolant: Coolant keeps the engine from overheating. Verify the proper coolant level and mix ratio to prevent engine damage in high-temperature conditions.
  • Transmission fluid: Adequate transmission fluid levels and quality are essential for smooth gear shifting. Consult your vehicle’s manual to determine when it needs to be changed, as it varies by make and model.
  • Brake fluid: Proper brake fluid is crucial for efficient braking. If the fluid appears dark or if it has been more than two years since the last replacement, consider flushing and replacing it.

Inspect and Rotate Tyres: Tyres are the only point of contact between your vehicle and the road, making their condition vital for safety and performance. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Check tyre pressure: Ensure consistent tyre pressure according to the manufacturer’s specifications, as changes in temperature can affect it. Properly inflated tyres improve fuel efficiency and reduce the risk of blowouts.
  • Inspect tyre tread: Insufficient tread depth reduces traction and increases the risk of skidding. Use the “20 cent coin test” to check if the tyre tread depth is within the legal limit of 1.6mm.
  • Rotate tyres: Regular tyre rotation promotes even tread wear and extends the life of your tyres. Consider rotating them every 8,000-10,000 kilometres or as recommended by your vehicle’s manual.

Air Conditioning System: With rising temperatures, your car’s air conditioning system must be in good working order. Take the following actions:

  • Test the air conditioning: Before the heat becomes unbearable, test your car’s air conditioning system to ensure it is functioning correctly. If you notice any issues, such as insufficient cooling or strange noises, have it inspected and serviced by a professional technician.
  • Clean or replace cabin air filter: A clean cabin air filter not only enhances air quality but also improves the efficiency and performance of your air conditioning system. Replace or clean the filter according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Battery and Electrical System: Extreme weather conditions can place additional strain on your car’s battery. Take these steps to ensure your electrical system is in optimal condition:

  • Inspect the battery: Check for signs of corrosion, loose connections, or leaks. Ensure that the battery terminals are clean and secure. If your battery is more than three years old, consider having it tested or replaced as the summer heat can accelerate battery degradation.
  • Test electrical components: Ensure that all exterior and interior lights, including headlights, turn signals, and brake lights, are functioning correctly. Faulty lighting can reduce visibility and compromise safety.

Preparing your car for the upcoming spring/summer season in South Africa is essential to ensure safe and reliable transportation. By checking and maintaining fluid levels, inspecting and rotating tyres, maintaining the air conditioning system, and evaluating the battery and electrical system, you can significantly reduce the risk of breakdowns and enhance the overall performance of your vehicle. Remember to consult your vehicle’s manual or seek professional assistance when necessary to address any specific maintenance requirements.
