A 67-year-old Vietnamese billionaire, Truong My Lan, has been sentenced to death for defrauding one of the country’s biggest banks for over a decade.
She is one of the very few Vietnamese women to be sentenced for a white-collar crime.
My Lan was convicted of taking out R226 billion in loans from the Saigon Commercial Bank. The verdict requires My Lan to return R 508 million, which prosecutors believe might not be recovered.
Some reports suggest that the death penalty could be the court’s way of trying to encourage her to return some of the money stolen.
The case has sparked debate over the appropriateness of the death penalty for financial crimes and has drawn attention to issues of corporate fraud and accountability in Vietnam.
The Siz The World team deliberated on whether this was a fit punishment or too extreme.
