SARS moves to tighten grip on influencer endorsements and campaign earnings

Speaking to Sizwe Dhlomo recently on Business Update, Gugulethu Mfuphi highlighted that the South African Revenue Service (SARS) is tightening its focus on social media influencers.
“The truth is, any form of income that you earn is subject to tax,” explained Mfuphi.
“There are rules and exemptions regarding how much, but all income must be disclosed to SARS. SARS has been very clear that they have heightened the level of compliance.”
She added: “They have noted that a large number of influencers fail to disclose endorsements and campaigns that they participate in, which makes them non-compliant.”
SARS is also increasing media engagement and financial education to ensure that influencers who are not registered as sole proprietors, or trading in their personal capacity, still pay the appropriate tax on the campaigns and endorsements they are involved in.
