Streaming giant Netflix South Africa has quietly implemented a price increase for its subscription services, effective immediately for new subscribers and rolling out for existing members based on their billing cycles.
While the popular R99 per month Basic plan will remain unchanged, other tiers will see increases of up to 20%.
This marks the second price hike for South African Netflix subscribers since the platform launched in the country in 2016, with the previous increase occurring in September 2021.
The timing of Netflix’s price adjustment follows rival MultiChoice’s annual price increase for its DStv and Showmax services, which took effect in April 2025.
According to Netflix, the price adjustments are necessary to “continue to invest in programming and deliver more value for our members,” allowing for reinvestment to further enhance the viewing experience.
The specific price changes for South African subscribers are as follows:
- Mobile: Increased from R49 to R59 (a 20% increase)
- Basic: Remains unchanged at R99
- Standard: Increased from R159 to R179 (approximately a 13% increase)
On Business Update, Gugulethu Mfuphi joined Sizwe Dhlomo to discuss how Netflix is increasing its subscription prices without any formal announcement.
