Fuel prices keep going up: Here are some fuel-efficient driving techniques
With these regular fuel price increases, everyone is doing their best to keep the raising cost to a minimal, and fuel-efficient driving techniques is one way to make it happen.
Driving more sparingly can save your annual fuel costs by several hundred rands, increase road safety, and prolong the life of your car.
Point of View with Phemelo Motene spoke with Motoring Expert, Pogiso Dibakoane who gave some helpful hints on how you can alter your driving techniques that will save you some money.

Don’t start your car with you foot already on your accelerator
“Engine wear occurs usually on startup, because your only has not reached certain components. it’s very important that you shouldn’t do that. Although you should idle your car, some manufacturers say you shouldn’t. Idling your car for a small amount of time allows your oil to get to certain components.” says Dibakoane,

Make sure your wheel alignment and tyre pressure is correct
“With tyre pressure, if it is flat it can create drag, especially if it is not inflated to the right specification.”
Use the air conditioner on highways, and the windows at low speeds
“When you are driving in town, you can roll down your windows because you are not reaching certain speeds and your rav counts are not going up. When you reach the highway, use the aircon because your rav counts is much higher, and you are not drawing much power from your fuel consumption.”
Change gears on time
“People that drive manual cars, change your gears on time.”
Dibakoane also shared that while driving speed is probably the most important element influencing fuel consumption, there are several other driving behaviors you can adopt that can significantly reduce the amount of money you spend at the pump.
