DA Leader John Steenhuisen on the party’s ‘Moonshot Pact’ convention.
The Democratic Alliance (DA), the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), the Freedom Front Plus (FFF+), ActionSA, the National Freedom Party (NFP), the United Independent Movement (UIM), and the Spectrum National Party (SNP) are the seven parties whose leaders jointly announced the meeting’s date on Monday.
Steenhuisen announced that the Convention will take place on 16 and 17 August at the same venue that hosted the CODESA negotiations.
He added that the Moonshot Pact would bring together different parties – excluding the ANC, EFF, and their proxies – to ensure that the opposition focuses our collective energies on defeating the ANC, rather than on attacking each other.

Point of View with Phemelo Motene spoke to DA Leader John Steenhuisen on the party’s ‘Moonshot Pact’ convention.
Listen to the full conversation here:
On the importance of the ‘Moonshot Pact’ convention
“I think it is symbolic, and as much as CODESA symbolizes a new beginning for the country we need a new renewal and a new beginning.”
“Hopefully the ‘Moonshot Pact’ will bring a new beginning and an alternative ahead of the election, and I think that it should be an exciting thing. Especially in an environment that no single party will have an outright majority, coalitions are the way of the future. We aope to get a 15 month runway to prepare for that eventuality.
On DA leading the process
“The DA is deeply committed to this process, and we believe this Convention will indeed be the most important political conversation to take place in our country since the transition to democracy.”
