83 clinics and 32 hospital phone lines were cut in Gauteng.
Phone lines were disconnected by Telkom because of what the Gauteng Health Department claims are unpaid bills, leaving 32 hospitals and 83 clinics impacted in total.

According to Gauteng Health, there were multiple inconsistencies where Telkom would send invoices describing facilities that weren’t part of the department, which resulted in payment delays.
Gauteng Department of Health Spokesperson, Motalatale Modiba said, R3.4 million was released this week, and R4 million was paid last week.
“What we also need to indicate is that the situation we are finding ourselves in is that we have a long-term plan of getting ourselves out of this situation, and part of that is to migrate our communication systems to the Gauteng voice network system. This is where the majority of our systems have migrated to. That then leads to lower costs in terms of communication between institutions.”

After Telkom cut phone lines because of unpaid bills, several Gauteng hospitals and clinics have activated alternative numbers.
