Point of View with Phemelo Motene spoke to Mlungisi Mabaso, Johannesburg Human Settlements MMC on what is being done to assist the families.

According to Mabaso, the Johannesburg Human Settlements MMC, the rain’s damage was so severe that some inhabitants had to leave their homes.
“Families who were displaced had requested to be given an opportunity to ascertain the condition of the weather, remember that it started raining on Friday, it is then that we started experiencing these floods.”
“Towards the end of Saturday, they started to clean up. When we started discussing the issue of relocation the water level had declined, it was only a few individuals we were experiencing challenges. We were able to find accommodation within the area, some had already asked their relatives and friends to accommodate them.” said Mabaso.

Contractors trying to fix a sinkhole on the Klipspruit Valley road may have attempted to redirect water from a nearby dam, according to Mabaso, which could have made the flash floods worse.
“There has never been any flooding to that hostel, but now because there’s construction here they have diverted the water to flow to that hostel and it is a problem that is sitting with the Department now. But we are going to communicate with them.”
