After weeks of anticipation, Kaya Breakfast officially made its on-air debut on Wednesday, 1 July, with DJ Fresh and Thato Mataboge behind the microphones.
From surprise street activations and entertaining on-air moments to a special appearance by Doctor Khumalo, the show’s first broadcast delivered plenty of memorable highlights as the new breakfast team welcomed listeners to a fresh chapter on Kaya 959.

Street Squad spreads the Kaya Breakfast buzz
To celebrate the launch of Kaya Breakfast, the Kaya 959 Street Squad took to the streets, handing out branded air fresheners and connecting with listeners on their morning commute. The activation gave commuters a warm welcome while spreading the excitement around the show’s debut.

Fresh puts listeners to the test with the Fresh Quiz
What’s a breakfast show without some fun? DJ Fresh and Thato introduced The Fresh Quiz, where listeners were asked a series of questions, with every answer beginning with a different letter in the word FRESH.
The very first winner of the quiz was Sarah, who walked away with R1000. She also shared a special moment with DJ Fresh, who remembered her from many years ago.

Doctor Khumalo joins the conversation
Legendary South African midfielder Doctor Khumalo was the first special guest on Kaya Breakfast. Speaking to DJ Fresh and Thato Mataboge, he reflected on his personal growth over the past 20 years and spoke about his long-standing relationship with Thato, sharing how their careers have crossed paths over the years.
Kaya Breakfast hits the streets
The excitement wasn’t confined to the studio. During the final 20 minutes of the debut broadcast, DJ Fresh and Thato headed out into the streets to meet members of the Kaya 959 family and hand out goodies.The atmosphere was electric, with plenty of hooting, cheering and feel-good energy as listeners welcomed the new breakfast team.
