Trevor Manuel, chairman of Old Mutual and a former finance minister, has given a damning appraisal of the political establishment in the nation,
He has argued that it is past due for the government to organize itself in order to address the various problems the nation is currently facing.

On the current state of South Africa
“There are so many things that happen in South Africa, the announcement by the Minister in parliament that 82 murders happen in South Africa a day. There’s no other country in the world like that, not even countries at war have that kind of number. Things are deteriorating by the day and there seems to be no end to it.”

On the leadership deficit in the country
“Whether you are taking about policing or education, there is no re-training happening. We are not acting in a way that is advancing national interest…”
On Ramaphosa’s presidency
“I think the words that were used in the integrated report were that what we we are lacking in South Africa is decisive leadership. There are too many Ministers and public servants who aren’t performing and who are remaining in positions. This country must have decisive leadership, it must happen in provincial level, it must happen at national level, but it must happen on local government level, because were we live we need to have access to safe and clean water, safe and secure sanitation, street lighting, roads, play areas for children, libraries, all of these areas of responsibilities that the constitution gives to local government are in a terrible state of neglect.”
