As we wrap up the year, Kaya Biz will host a special broadcast conversation reflecting on the 2023 economic year, on Tuesday, 05 December, reflecting on whether South Africa won the year.
The conversation will cover different aspects of the economy, companies and sectors to get a feel for how they performed in 2023.

Dineo Molefe – CFO of MTN SA
Dineo will be covering a range of topics affecting the telecoms industry which has been massively hit by the rolling blackouts.
MTN SA has had to spend almost R5 billion to ensure that customers remain connected during the loadshedding crisis. The network provider has also revealed that they have experienced a decline in the number of customers taking up contracts due to the high cost of living crisis.
Anbann Chetti – African Bank CFO
African Bank’s profits slumped by almost a third as bad debt doubled this year.
The bank which has its sights set on the lucrative home loans market, launched a pilot project for its staff as it builds its presence in secured lending.
Anbann will touch on how the bank performed this year as well as give insight into how African Bank will fine-tune its home loan proposition before taking it to market.
Zinhle Tyikwe – CEO of Consumer Goods Council of South Africa (CGCSA)
CGCSA, which represents more than 9 000 businesses including SA’s top retailers and food manufacturers says loadshedding and logistical issues have had an enormous impact on business operations.
One industry that has been impacted the most is food production. CGCSA has warned that consumers will face much higher prices unless the government urgently finds solutions to the power cuts that are crippling the economy.
Sizwe Nxedlana – FNB Private Segment CEO
First National Bank (FNB) has made several innovative customer offerings this year including launching Nav Earth on its banking app which estimates clients’ carbon emissions to allow them data to offset this.
The bank’s rewards programme eBucks has also received 7 prestigious awards at the 2023 South African Loyalty Awards, which has paid out R20 billion since inception.
Nakampe Molewa – GM of Uber Eats for Sub-Saharan Africa
Loadshedding has meant 40% of South Africans have had to resort to buying takeaway meals and convenience foods because of loadshedding this year.
PwC’s latest Global Consumer Insights Survey, shows this trend is a growing preference for ready-to-eat options during periods of power outages.
Similarly, 50% have changed the type of products they purchase to those that are less reliant on electricity and last longer.
