Ashley Saffy, Business Development Head at FNB Card joins Gugulethu Mfuphi on Kaya Biz to share insight into how much South Africans are paying for streaming services.
A year ago South Africans were forking out R119 million a month on streaming services which include Apple iTunes, Spotify, Google Music, Amazon Prime, Netflix, Showmax, YouTube, Disney + and Deezer.
This amount has increased significantly since then according to Ashley, and South Africans are reportedly spending roughly 70% more on streaming platforms.
“Our customers are spending on the likes of Netflix, Apple iTunes, Showmax, YouTube, Spotify and Disney +, and we’ve seen growth across all of these platforms.
Customers are spending more on entertainment services whether it’s streaming based or subscription based.”
Ashley says the trend may have been sparked during the Covid-19 pandemic which has now influenced the lifestyles of many South Africans.
People would rather stay home and watch their favourite shows or movies on a streaming platform than go out.
The behaviour is also something that may have been influenced by global trends as Disney + grew in popularity internationally, the platform has also become a firm favourite in South Africa.
According to Ashley streaming and subscription services have grown approximately 600% year-on-year.
