Bheki Cele says SAPS has identified 12 people linked to the burning of the 21 trucks.
According to Police Minister Bheki Cele, authorities are closely pursuing 12 people who may be involved in the recent torching of trucks on public roads.
The Minister on Wednesday briefed the nation following a high-level meeting with Provincial Commissioners of KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Free State, Gauteng, and Mpumalanga that was led by the National Police Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola on the South African Police Service (SAPS)’s response to crimes against freight vehicles.
Since Sunday, July 9, 2023, 21 vehicles carrying products have caught fire in Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, and Limpopo, according to Cele.
Nine vehicles were burned in Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal, while three trucks burned in Limpopo.

“These are organised and sophisticated operations. They are organised in one centre in the northern part of KwaZulu-Natal and dispersed in different groups to do these things,”
“We have found it necessary to apprise the nation of these criminal operations and outline the response of law enforcement to the isolated and cowardice acts.
“Whether it is economic sabotage, labour or service delivery related disputes – police are closing in on those who choose to use violence and intimidation for whatever motive.” said Cele,

“It’s been a rough 3-days but it gives us some comfort to know that police have increased visibility on the roads to try to curb these attacks.
Our suspicions are that there may be involvement from some truck drivers who have been frustrated about some labor disputes, including the hiring of foreign nationals in the trucking industry.
We are in constant engagements with government to bring in people who can assist us in resolving the situation.”
