Maintaining friendships is not child’s play. Just like romantic relationships, friendships are a long-term commitment that requires mutual work and effort.
Healthy relationships are built on the premise of support, commitment, and dedication.
On Feel Good with Andy Maqondwana, Andy talks to listeners about what it means to have long-lasting friendships as well as, the keys needed to maintain friendships.
Here are a few tips below to maintain your friendships:
- MAKE TIME TO CONNECT: Sometimes making time for your friends can be quite difficult, especially when you’re dealing with deadlines at work, attending to your family’s needs, or pursuing hobbies. Despite this challenge, if you want to keep your friends, you need to prioritise time with your friends!
- COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY: Communication is key. Having meaningful conversations is not only a good way to get to know your friends, but it’s an excellent way to build trust.
- BE SUPPORTIVE: There’s nothing more rewarding than having a friend who gives you their undying support. Support comes in different forms, whether that be acting as a shoulder to cry on or being present and consistent in your friends’ lives.
- BE HONEST AND COMPASSIONATE: Being honest and truthful establishes trust within your friendships, that said you cannot be honest without being compassionate by expressing empathy.
- RESPECT THEIR BOUNDARIES: Setting boundaries and respecting those boundaries is critical when trying to maintain your relationship. Know and understand when to refrain from their matters and when to step in.
