A recent post on X (formerly Twitter) sparked conversation with the statement: “Co-workers are not your friends. Do your job and hit the gate. Period!”
The post suggests that the workplace is not the right environment for genuine friendships but rather a space to focus on professional responsibilities and leave. This sentiment has divided opinions, prompting Drive 959 with Glen to explore the topic further.
The team asked listeners, “What is your attitude towards the social environment at your workplace? Do you see your colleagues as friends, associates, family, strangers, or sworn enemies? Have you made genuine, lifelong friendships at work?”
Glen Lewis joked about the dynamics within the Drive 959 team, saying, “The funny thing about this team is that we don’t even call each other on weekends. If Kgomotso drops a WhatsApp on the group, Skhumba gets annoyed.”
Skhumba chimed in, adding, “I’ll see her on Monday—why does she want to talk to me over the weekend?”
Kgomotso, however, had a different perspective, “When I make a genuine connection with a colleague, I will definitely maintain that friendship.”
Skhumba conceded that workplace friendships can work, “As much as we all come from different backgrounds, the one common thing that makes us understand each other is work. So, we need to find other ways to connect and be friends. Sometimes it grows from that into a close friendship.”
