959 Breakfast co-host Sol Phenduka recently became a plant dad and says the experience has brought a ‘sense of calmness’ in his life.
It has been said that plant parenthood contributes immensely to one’s mental well-being and Sol attests to this. His journey as a plant parent started in 2022.
“I started being a plant dad last year. Growing up we had Aloe Vera plants and every time someone would visit they’d say ‘It is a good plant’ and they ‘chase away bad spirits’ in your home,” he shares. “I’ve kept one in the studio and in the living room.”
Aloe Vera plants are ‘very resilient’ and don’t require much water. “I wanted something I could take care of on a regular basis. You can’t get an indoor plant and put it outside, some plants don’t thrive outside. Some are for indoors so I got an indoor bamboo plant,” adds Sol who is developing a strong bond with his plants.
“You even talk to them when you water them. The beauty of plants is that if they die, sometimes you can revive them. It brings a sense of calmness, especially when you water them.”
Because most plants generally require a calm and healthy environment to thrive, Sol is weary of what he lets into his home.
“Part of taking care of plants is your environment – if it is toxic plants can actually die. I’m still fairly new and I am learning,” he said.
